Event: Beyond Words – Art Book Fair

Location: Central Library, Hull

Date: 1st – 3rd September 2017

Details: Freedom Festival will take over Hull’s Central Library to host the festival’s first book fair, in partnership with Hull Culture and Leisure Library Services and book publishers Book Works.  The book fair is part of the Beyond Words project, which features an exhibition of newly commissioned artists’ publications, and will be the area’s premier event for artists’ books, chapbooks, zines and printed matter.

A diverse group of more than 20 different artists – from the local area and throughout the UK – will be showcased during the fair, with publications on sale focusing on subjects such as art, politics, fiction, photography, history, design and music. There will also be workshops held at Hull’s Central Library during the festival weekend – see detail below.

Visitors are invited to learn about making books and zines, to discuss issues the artists experience in their practice and discover a whole new world of artists work and creativity.

Two free workshops:

Between the Borders – Collage Zine Workshop

Saturday 3 September 2-4pm

Liverpool based collective Between the Borders invites you to bring along your stories and images to join a creative collage workshop on the themes of freedom and movement. As a group of people with and without citizenship in the UK, BTB works to expand the conversation around migration, asylum and cultural politics. We will be collaborating to cut, paste and copy, and produce zines as a means of dissecting, rethinking and expanding our understanding of language and images.

Book Works – Introduction to simple bookbinding techniques

Saturday 3 September 1-2.30pm and 4-5.30pm

Ina Baumeister from Book Works invited you to make your own single and double section booklets in this practical workshop that acts as an introduction to simple bookbinding techniques. All materials will be provided and you need no previous experience to join in.
